Modderfontein Reserve

I enjoyed going on the hiking trails, however they need to be marked better as we spent a good time lost on one of them.
Make sure you take water with and if you have the hiking trails app rather check the route out before hand as there were a few groups that got lost along the way.

Absolutely tranquil and clean and family orientated. The toilets are spotless. The fishing is great too.

I was enjoying the peace of this place, when a large group of Nigerians came to a table close. There is a sign saying No Alchahol, however they had six packs of Alchahol, plus they were smoking weed which the smell was coming my way

There was 3 Security Guards at the car park who didn't even know this was happening.

Lovely relaxing place to stroll around and picnic with the family. Definitely recommend this place for a romantic, relaxing day with a loved one, children or pets.

If you're going for a day trip I would definitely suggest the 11km hike rather than the 5km. The 5km is way too short and I was rather disappointed afterwards. It's never too busy on the trails. Didn't have a chance to see the picnic areas but they seemed quite busy.

Really pretty and beautiful. The reserve needs a bit of TLC. The road in is terrible, and the walking paths in need of a bit of repair.

A wonderful day out to cycle. Its safe and well organised. We did the 10klm and will be back for the longer ride. A great farmers market afterwards for a browse and wonderful selection of foods. Well worth a visit!

Great hiking trial with proper markings. 5 and 11 km option. R30 enterance. The views next to the water are quite amazing!

Kids came here for fishing.it was a breath of fresh air to be there. The weather was just perfect. I will definitely visit again

Go there. Great place for family. Great place for kids. Some live music. Very good crowd of our diverse heritage. Very very very amazing food diversity too. Do the hike first, have some food and wine after. Alcoholic beverages sold on site, alongside those of the fruity variety. There are toilets on site, which are not the cleanest, but not the worst either. In terms of walks, hikes and cycling there is plenty to explore for an entire day. Just so nice to find this little piece of Johannesburg that I have been to before, in ten years of living here. What a treat. Prices are variable for food, support the local stalls. Cash and card is fine from the gate to the hike start. Yoco little machines for cards, but take some cash to tip if needed. Great set up. Very safe. Well appointed facility for a day or even work event.

A wonderful place to hike but the admin side is frustrating. It can take up to 30 minutes for 6 cars to get into the bottom gate. The process is slow and annoying.

Fantastic day out, caught plenty fish, neat, clean, definitely worth visiting if you love fishing

Beautiful sceneries of 3 dams. People fishing at the 1 dam. They were catching fish.nice outdoor trip for the whole family and also farmers market tgere

-Security is visible around the trail
-There is a picnic, fishing and braaing area by the river
-Bike trail also available for people with bicycles
-Entrance fee is R30 for adults

Visited Modderfontein picnic area this weekend. Usually a very nice experience. However sad to see a lot of litter lying around and benches at picnic area are very dirty. Dissapointing considering the entrance fee and otherwise beautiful surroundings.

Really hope management can improve this situation.

I have named Modderfontein as one of my soul spots. I go there to detox my life and face the next day. Unfortunately, over the last year the rubbish management of fishing at Fish Eagle Dam has changed my view. Even if you contact them beforehand, they give you rubbish information. Managers don't return your calls. If you have thoughts about fishing at the reserve, drink 4 tequilas and smack yourself against the head. If you still want to go fish there, have another 4 tequilas. There are issues with poaching that I have not received satisfactory answers to. Rather go to Blauwpan, you can get in at least. The security at Blauwpan is friendly and counts the people in the queue to let you know if you can get in or not. The security at Modderfontein sat in his hut for over half and hour before opening the gate. The rules at Modderfontetin state that they have 14 stands available. We went to the only gate we have ever used. We were number 8 in the queue and we were there at 5am. The 7 cars ahead of us got in. When we got to the gate, we were told that the fishing spots were full. Huh? Yes.there is a new gate open. Huh? If we had known this, we would have left. We were awake at 3h30 to make sure we got there in time.to get in. Apparently Toroko Trails don't have the organizational ability to take bookings for fishing. It isn't difficult and has been done before. If you think it is difficult, I can help you with a process.

I love that you can do different route everytime you go there. Beautiful nature scenes. Love the sound of water while you walking. I been going there for year's now and there is lots of new development over these pass years.

Great ambience. Love the outdoors. Beautiful and serenity to the fullest. There is a market place with an abundance of stalls foods and alcoholic beverages as well at the market. Good for hiking. Great for cycling. Great for families and family friendly. Easy to medo hiking trails. There is a picnic spot. Fishing facilities is available. Prices at the main gate. Social distancing maintained.

Perfect for a morning jog or a mountain bike cycle with the family. The dam completes the perfect scenery along with the various species of birds. If you looking for a nice leisurely hike then this is the place to go to.
