This was a very uncomfortable visit for me. It’s not easy going into a doctors room and it can be quite traumatic when the doctor seems to clearly not want you to be there. Dr Richards was impatient, rude, and at a point threatened to give a bad report if she wasn’t happy with my responses. She seemed to want to make me squirm and she successfully did. I needed a fair assessment and she literally terrified me. I couldn’t wait to get away from her and will never return. I sincerely hope it was a very bad day for her and this wasn’t typical. The alternative would be that she just didn’t like to treat a certain patient demography and that would be sad. Doctors are human too, but it would be great if they also recognised everyone sitting in front of them came in vulnerable, this is not the place for a power play.

My fiance walked into sunninghill hospital on the 26th of November 2015 and then came home in a coffin on the 5th of Jan 2016
He was 45, in fit condition, although diagnosed with lung infiltrates. He could still run up a flight of stairs on the day of his admission

The open lung biopsy, in my opinion, followed by an onslaught of medication, weakened him to his death.
I dont blame the hospital, but I question the approach. I question if he was not on a good medical aid, would an open lung biopsy been performed before attempting treatment

From this experience, My personal advise to anyone reading this, go to Milpark and consult with Doctor Pahad Dr Greenblatt Dr Sussman
They are not only experts in their fields
They humble and have compassion for the families of the patient like I have never experienced before
You never have to beg for feedback on your loved one
We asked the question before admittance into sunninghill hospital for recommendations of doctors /pulmonologists, our question was met with a shrug. How I wish we had more doctors that cared for patients than they do for their pockets. I cannot believe for a single moment that this pulmonologist did not know that some of the most respected lung specialists are based at milpark hospital
Three years later and my grief still hits me like a wave that I am unprepared for
I hope you are able to sleep well at night doctor, , cos most nights my rib cage feels like it's going to burst from grief and my empty bed is a constant reminder of what was taken away from me, and as for happiness, our family had to come to terms that we lost this too
