The Press Club reviews
20I got the Mr Press eggs Benedict. You could taste the vinegar that the eggs had been poached in so badly. The hollandaise sauce was very watery.
Had the worst experience at The Press Club. Asked my waiter if I could make up my own breakfast ie eggs bacon halloumi, for which she said yes and pointed out the individual prices for which I confirmed twice. That was not the case when the bill came. I questioned it and was met with a mafia style reaction by Brett Sklarchik the owner. The most rude, brash and hostile person I have met to date. It bordered on racist. He was not attentive, or appologetic AT ALL. He basically said if I dont like it I can leave in front of my 12 year old son. That is the reason why we need a new venue in this centre that could give the service and food that Selwyn once used to give when he owned it.
Unassuming gem hidden in the Umhlanga Centre. Excellent breakfast, corn fritter tower for me and English with mushrooms side order for Lizette. Cuppucino the way it should be.
The sesame chicken salad is simply the best. Brett and his charming wife are so attentive. Good staff
The waitron staff were amazing and the food was delicious. Found the guy who reprimanded his staff where everyone could hear to be extremely unprofessional.
Love their food!
Anything they do is proper.
We love their salads and curries but you can't go wrong at this place. Everything they do it yummy.
Service is good
Beautifully set tables, friendly and warm service, and had an amazing breakfast. Highly recommend.
I love the coffee here! One of the best places to get coffee in Durban by far. The restuarant is beautiful and so cozy.
Best curry in town! Actually all their food is great. Quick and attentive service. Highly recommend
Iconic coffee shop in the heart of Umhlanga at the Umhlanga Centre. Est in 1982 by Selwyn Sklarchik.
Really liked it. Will go again. Good food. Lovely presentation. Flexable with their menu. And a Happy Manager.
I had high hopes for a delicious Sunday Roast and was very disappointed. I ordered the Roast Lamb with Yorkshire Pudding and Vegetables. The Yorkshire Pudding was overdone, the gravy was extremely salty and the lamb was very dry. It was hard to tell what kind of meat it was. I complained about the salty gravy, and the gravy covered meat was replaced with more meat, minus, the gravy. I did draw attention to the poor quality of the meal on the way out, and was told that if I came again It would be 'on them'. I was not offered my money back, even though it would have been nice to get some discount on such a poor quality meal.
I do not understand how this meal got out of the kitchen without any quality inspection. I would not have served this to guests at home
My husband enjoyed his chicken salad, and the waitress was courteous and friendly
I have been a happy, long time diner at the Press Club since the very first restaurant in Salisbury Arcade. It was my first time at the Umhlanga restaurant.
I have been going to Press Club for years - I have even referred many people there, and yes I know their coffees and cakes are expensive. But I have had 2 interesting experiences there recently.
1. I have just had the most expensive Chai Latte I have ever had anywhere - R39. Add almond milk to that and I paid R10 more than anywhere else I have ever had one of these drinks.
2. I am vegan and when asking if there were any vegan recommendations from the chef, I was told that I should eat some lettuce. Not the right attitude to have especially in this age of variable diets.almost all dishes can be veganised very easily.
The Press Club has arguably the most interesting & extensive menu in Durban. The discerning palette will find some dish to satisfy. Well done Brett. I don't know how you do it.
Very nice coffee shop located in the heart of Umhlanga. Service is good and friendly and prices are not to bad at all. There is a Super Spar right next to the coffee shop which makes it an ideal meeting place before enjoying and even more wonderful shpopping experience.
A great atmosphere coupled with a tasty menu makes this a must visit spot, especially for their breakfast options! Try the Nutella Latte!
Great breakfast options. Coffee sizes are too small for my liking and service could improve slightly.
This is the best restaurant in the area. The potato and bean curry is the best I've ever tasted. We just can't get enough of it. Burger night is delicious and real value for money. Prawn night - wow - the flavours are amazing!
The food was good, prices were fair. I think my choice of meal was just wrong. I would go back and have something different.
